Joanie Brittingham is a versatile artist with many talents. From classical singing to writing prose, poetry, and dramatic works, to teaching voice and piano students, and editing Classical Singer Magazine, she's always engaged, connected, and ready to bring her best to the next project. 

Performing and teaching

Praised for “dramatic versatility” (Opera News), “meltingly beautiful” interpretations (Forbes), “lovely soprano” and “lucid diction” (New York Times), “captivating stage presence” (New York Classical Review), and “full-bodied voice” (Tulsa World), all while demonstrating “strength and resistance” (Opera Wire) throughout “outstanding solo work” (New York Concert Review), Brittingham has performed at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, and Symphony Space and with Riverside Theatre, the New Ohio Theatre, Fresh Squeezed Opera, New Amsterdam Opera, Chelsea Opera, the New Works Festival with OPERA America, American Lyric Theatre, and VHRP Live, among others.

 

As a voice and piano teacher, Brittingham brings decades of experience, patience, and an emphasis on music being fun to the studio, and celebrates the uniqueness of every voice! The goal is to make singing easy and efficient for students to express themselves clearly. 

Writing

Brittingham’s writing has been described as “breathless comedy” and having “real wit” (New York Classical Review). Published in Black Cat Tales, Eternal Haunted Summer, The Last Girls Club, Wild Garlic, and Past Ten as well as the book Practicing for Singers.

 

Dramatic works include the libretto for the opera Serial Killers and the City, which premiered with Experiments in Opera, and was a part of New Wave Opera's Night of the Living Opera, as well as an adaptation of The Sea Lady for The Post-Meridian Radio PlayersNow You See Me, a radio play as a part of Eclectic Full Contact Theatre's Half Hour Audio Hour, is available on all podcast services. Brittingham is the Associate Editor for Classical Singer Magazine and has contributed to many classical music textbooks.
